California Proposition 65

Warning: Cancer and reproduction harm. www.p65warnings.ca.gov

At World Matcha Inc., we take product safety very seriously. For instance, we only use food contact substances that comply with the United States Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) regulations in the Cuzen Matcha Maker. However, as required by the state of California, we include a Proposition 65 (“Prop 65”) warning on the product packaging of the Cuzen Matcha Maker.

Prop 65 requires businesses to issue “clear and reasonable” warnings about potentially significant exposures to certain chemicals that California has determined cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. The Prop 65 list includes over 900 chemicals and substances that may be found in many consumer products. In order to avoid the warning, a manufacturer must test its products for all of the over 900 Prop 65 chemicals to verify that none of them are present in concentrations above safe levels. This testing is prohibitively expensive for small companies like World Matcha, Inc.

Our Cuzen Matcha Maker uses Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic for the machine body and other parts. This compound itself is NOT included on the Prop 65 list, is stable, and does not leach, but some of the chemicals that make up ABS are listed individually. In some cases, the finished compound plastic may contain low levels of each chemical, which may or may not be above the threshold requiring a Prop 65 warning. Since testing the concentration of ABS components in the Cuzen Matcha Maker is prohibitively expensive, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to adopt the Prop 65 warning to avoid possibly having an improperly marked product sold in California.

Also, the Cuzen Matcha Maker uses polystyrene for a part in the mill unit. Again, this compound itself is NOT included on the Prop 65 list, but styrene is listed. In some cases, the finished compound plastic may contain low levels of styrene; thus, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to adopt the warning for the same reasons as above.

Please note, our Prop 65 warning statement is NOT required by the US FDA or other federal agencies. Prop 65 requirements exceed US federal safety and exposure guidelines and apply only to products sold in the state of California.
